Having celebrated her 18th birthday last night, my niece, who is staying with me while she does a course, set off for the tube station to attend her college. A rather forlorn phone call has just told me she is on her way back: her Oyster card for reduced rate 16-17 year tube travel has expired overnight and she hasn't got enough money.
Welcome to the world of the adults.

Similar thing happened to me. I was a registered 'student' so entitled to reduced travel rates while I was working on phd. The day AFTER my viva (oral examination) I was told my travel card was no longer valid as I'd passed my exam. I had to buy a new travel pass and apply for a reimbursement of the student pass. I can't wait til I'm eligible for an OAP freedom pass.
